This is a 17 pound Atlantic Salmon caught in Lake Ontario on August 16, 2001. This fish was caught on a silver and green pirate 55 spoon trolled 50 feet down at a speed of about 2.7 mles an hour. Atlantic Salmon are stocked in Lake Ontario by the DEC. At one time they were a native species to Lake Ontario, but years of over fishing, pollution and degradation of spawning streams brought about thier demise. The current state record for Atlantic Salmon is 24 pounds and 15 ounces and was caught by Mike Dandino on April 5, 1997 also from Lake Ontario.
