Lake Ontario is the 14th largest lake in the world. Lake Ontario is 193 miles long and 53 miles wide, with 726 miles of shoreline. Its average depth is 283 feet, and its maximum depth is over 800 feet. At one time the lake was nearly dead but in the last 30 years it has seen an amazing change. The severe pollution has stopped and the use of pesticides has been resolved. The DEC has been stocking trout and salmon for over 20 years now. It was hoped that someday they would establish a self sustaining populations. The lake trout, brown trout and the steelhead do have a significant amount of natural reproduction, but not enough to stop the stocking programs. Very little reproduction of king salmon occurs naturally but coho salmon have had significant success on a few occasions. Lake Ontario has many Charter Boats available to let you enjoy a wonderful day of fishing on Lake Ontario. Most charters target trout and salmon. Some charters also fish for smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, and muskellunge. Charters range in price and duration most offer half and full days fishing with prices ranging from $300 to $600 depending on the species you are fishing for and the number of passengers that will be onboard. If you are looking for a trophy to hang on the wall, chances are you can get one while fishing from a charter boat. Most captains are on the lake daily and are well aware of current hots spots and lures. They also work together and share info to help keep the clients happy. Should the weather turn bad and your trip end prematurely most captains will pro rate the trip or in some cases reschedule another day. The Charter Boats on Lake Ontario are well equipped with the best fishing tackle money can buy! They also have the latest in electronics, with GPS, radar, fishfinders, cell phones, some even feature underewater cameras hooked to the downriggers that show the fish chasing and hitting the lures. Some captains also have a VCR hooked up to record the fishing action under the water for you. A few of the charter captains even provide free fishing photos or will record your trip with a camcorder upon request. The Charter Boats season usually starts in early April and runs until the end of September. Spring fishing in April and May is usually done by trolling stickbaits and spoons off of planner boards. As the water warms up more in May and June the fishing will slowly move off shore. For the rest of the summer Downriggers, Dipsey Divers, and Leadcore Lines, will become the main methods of targeting trout and salmon. July and early August will find most of the best fishing off shore. Near the end of August the fishing will move inshore again as the trout and salmon begin to stage for spawning runs. |

Craig Rice of Canton, Ohio was fishing Lake Ontario on July 15, 2002. He was fishing with Charter Captain Bob Stevens of Sunrise II out of Oak Orchard. This was his second year fishing with Captain Bob, and he wasn't disapointed either. He managed to hook and land this monster 38 pound King Salmon. |

In August 0f 2004 Joseph Pawelko Jr. was fishing with Captain J. Mickey Mc Donald of Irondequoit Bay Charters Rochester, New York. Thats where he caught this 28 pound king. The big salmon hit a Wonderbread Stinger and pretty much wore Joe out. His group had a fantastic charter and caught a boatload of fish. Among the days catch were King Salmon, Browns, and Lakers. |
Pictured here is 14 year old Bobby Moore of Sayre, P.A. with a thirty four pound King Salmon caught from Lake Ontario. This fantastic salmon was caught in late July 2003 fishing with Dave Johnson of Silver Bear Sports. The big salmon was caught on a flasher with a mackerel rig behind it about a mile east of the nuke plant. They landed another salmon in the mid twenties that day and lost another one. If you would like To Fish with Dave contact him at Silver Bear Sports Pulaski, NY 315-298-3479 or 800-877-3531. |

Pictured here is James Cleary from Big Flats NY he was fishing Lake Ontario on the Niagara River Bar with Captain Chas of Searcher Charters. That's where he caught this rather large lake trout That weighed over 17 pounds. This fish was taken on the Niagara Bar in December of 2002. This fish took a bass minnow on a 3 way rig while drifting in about 20 feet of water. This was the first fish of the day what a way to start any fishing trip. |
Pictured here is Conrad St. Laurent from Lewiston, Maine with a big 27 pound King Salmon that he caught from Lake Ontario on August 19, 2002. He was fishing aboard the Rodmaster Charters with Captain Mike Pastore from Irondequoit Bay, which is located on Lake Ontario’s south shore in Rochester, New York. Several nice Lake Trout were also caught on this trip. |

Bill Stickles with a 40 Pound King Salmon from Oak Orchard. This big King was caught straight out on 24N. He measured 48 3/4 inches. Don't know positively what he weighed, but it was in excess of 40 pounds. It Took 55 minutes to put him on the boat. He almost spooled us twice. Thank God it was the first line we dropped in the water and we were able to backup and chase him. He was caught on a spook 90 feet down. We caught so many big fish this day that we ended the day early because of fatigue. This same trip I also hooked 2 Mombo Lakers on the same rod. A day that we will never forget. |
In mid August 2001, Raymond Martin caught this fantastic seventeen pound Atlantic Salmon aboard a charter boat while fishing on Lake Ontario. The fishing was a bit tough because of the hot weather and the over abundance of bait that was showing up on the screens. So we hung in there and man did it pay off. Pictured here is an awesome 17 pound Atlantic Salmon caught on our last day. |

It was November 26, 2005 when Ken Hemshrot and his son Kenny booked a three day Trophy Musky Hunt with Ernie Lantiegne of Fish Doctor Charters. They caught 3 muskies in 3 days and lost one that they never got to see. The first photo is of Kenny Hemshrot and Ernie Lantiegne with a 50 and 1/4 inch Muskellunge which was safely released. The second photo is of Ken Hemshrot with a 44 inch Muskellunge that was also released. Ken and Kenny are proud to say that Ernie Lantiegne was absolutely one of the best and hardest working fishing guides they have ever had the privilege to fish with. Trophy Musky Hunts with Captain Ernie Lantiegne are strictly catch and release for the simple reason that muskies over 50 inches can be a ripe old age 25 years. There is always the possibility that another angler may get to catch and release the same fish again. Secondly it is much better to have a wild population of muskellunges with a fantastic genetic base to continue the world famous musky fishing the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands are blessed with. With a photo and a few measurements it is possible to have replica mount made which will look fantastic and last much longer than a actual mount. These fantastic fish are a valuable resource and with proper care and managment they will be with us for a long time. |
