Mike Anderson of Breckenridge, Colorado caught this amazing striped bass that weighed in at 48 pounds and was 51 inches long

The date was May 19, 2008 when Mike Anderson of Breckenridge, Colorado caught this amazing striped bass that weighed in at 48 pounds and was 51 inches long. He was fishing aboard the charter boat Herl's Girl with a group of 5 friends and they were able to limit out in less than 2 hours of fishing. The big striped bass fell victim to a green parachute jig tipped with pork rind strips.

This was Mike's first trip on a charter boat and it was money well spent. Any striped bass over 40 pounds is considered a trophy. Mike is going to have a replica of this monster bass made up and It will keep the memory of that day fresh for a long time.

Parachute Jigs and Umbrella Rigs are two of the most popular methods used to target striped bass off the waters of Montauk. Bluefish will often be in the catch as well and somedays they can be a nuisance because they will grab the lures before they can get down to the striped bass.

Montauk Sportfishing

Montauk is located at the far eastern end of Long Island. It is about 125 miles east of New York City. Montauk is New York State’s largest commercial fishing port. This region is known as one of the sport fishing capitals of the world. It is home to over 25 current world records.

The waters of Long Island Sound flow into the Atlantic Ocean at Montauk and bring in vast amounts of bait and nutrients. This attracts great schools of Striped Bass, Bluefish and Fluke. Since Montauk is all ready so far out in the ocean it makes it the closest port to the canyons and the gulfstream. This in turn creates a fantastic fishing opportunity for off shore trips for tuna, shark, and marlin. If the water is too rough for off shore fishing the in shore fishing is always great. During an in shore fishing trip anglers may encounter the following species Striped Bass, Bluefish, Fluke, Porgies, Sea Bass, and Flounder.

Montauk Harbor has a great fleet of commercial fishing and charter boats to choose from. There is also a large selection of party boats which leave port on daily fishing excursions as well. If you are looking to indulge your self with some of the best fishing the Atlantic Ocean can dish up Montauk is the place to be.
