Pictured here is Jim Cleary from Big, Flats NY and Raymond Martin from Elmira, NY. They are displaying a couple of nice salmon that were caught at the mouth of the Salmon River while night fishing with Shane Thomas of Gottum Guide Service.
The middle of September presents an awesome opportunity to get up close and personal with these big King Salmon. They are collecting up in the mouth of the river preparing for the fall spawning run. They will still hit plugs and spoons at this time. Fishing for the staging King Salmon involves casting large broken back rapalas and glow spoons after dark. Trolling the lake shore in 5 to 20 feet of water after dark is also productive. Steelhead and Brown Trout are often bonus catches at this time of year.
This fantastic type of fishing is only available for a short period of time. Once the water temperature drops enough and we get sufficient rain to raise the stream levels these fish will head upstream to spawn. Chasing a 30 pound Chinook Salmon around in the dark with a drift boat is a very awesome experience. If you want to try this on your own make sure to check the regulations. There is no fishing in the estatuary or the river itself after dark. You can only fish the river mouth and the lake of course.
Fisherman will also fish from the shores of Lake Ontario casting spoons and plugs as well. Fishing from the breakwalls is an additional option, but in the dark this is very dangerous so be careful and don't fish alone.
This is only the start of the fantastic fishing that will be going on for the next several months. If you would like to book a guide to do some fall fishing for salmon or trout on the Salmon River please visit our guides page at Salmon River Fishing Guides.
