Steve Ruhle with a very nice Great Sacandaga Lake northern pike

In May of 2005 Steve Ruhle was fishing the Great Sacandaga Lake with Gary's Guide and Charter Service. They were fishing for northern pike using live shiners for bait. Steve was using a 10 inch shiner when he caught this 38 inch northern pike. Later when they cleaned the fish they discovered a 16 inch rainbow trout in its stomach.

In June of 2005 Paul Subik was fishing with Gary's Guide and Charter Service. They were fishing for walleyes on Great Sacandaga Lake. The method used to target these fish was trolling stickbaits run off of planner boards. Thats the winning ticket that caught this big 7 and half pound walleye that was just short of 28 inches in length.

The Great Sacandaga Lake is the largest man made body of water in New York State. It is 29 miles long, has an average depth of 40 feet and a maximum depth of 90 feet at the Conkingville Dam. At one point the lake is nearly 5 miles wide.

The NY State record Northern Pike was caught here on September 15, 1940 by Peter Dubuc. This amazing fish weighed in at 46 pounds and 2 ounces.

The State of New York stocks the lake with walleyes every year. In addition to the fine northern pike and walleye fishing The Great Sacandaga Lake now offers excellent fishing for brown trout, rainbow trout, and landlocked salmon.

The great walleye fishing that New York State has to offer is in large part due to the efforts of the Oneida Fish Hatchery. Oneida Lake provides all of the walleye eggs for New York's walleye stocking program. Each year DEC produces approximately 300,000 pond-reared, 190,000 intensively reared, and 190,000,000 walleye fry to be stocked into more than 50 diffrent bodies of waters across the state.
