Having seen the prize fund in the 1,000 Dollar A Day Derby grow to the amazing sum of 10,000 Dollars I decided to book a charter trip with Captain Ron Penna of BUC-A-ROO CHARTERS , but that same day the pot was won. Well needing some rest and relaxation I decided to go any way since the derby starts back over at $1,000.
The fish finder was marking lots of bait all day, but not many fish. So we kept trolling around the bait pods waiting on a hungry King to find our bait. Around 11 AM the center down rigger went off and I grabbed the rod. The line went tight and the reel screamed like it was going to explode when the first run was over he had taken the line counter out to 450 feet. At this point he came to the surface and tried to use the 3 foot chop on the water to dislodge the Pirate Spoon he had mistaken for a free meal.
Surely this fish was over 20 pounds. As he was slowly coaxed toward the boat I knew it was a good fish so we carefully maneuvered the fish into the net. At this point we were all breathless it was a huge fish, but it was a male so it looked big but didn't weigh as heavy as he looked. The scale said 19 pounds. Oh so close! No fish that could meet the 20 pound minimum requirement were weighed in that day so the prize fund was carried over to 07/01/03 and goes up to 2,000 dollars. Raymond Martin
The 1,000 Dollar A Day Derby is new this year. It is open to all anglers in Canada and the US. The derby runs from May 1, 2003 to August 31, 2003 lake wide on Lake Ontario. The entry fee is $65.00 tax included for a single seasonal ticket. Charter Captains can sell you a one day ticket for $10.00. This is a very well run and organized derby and we encourage any one who may want to participate to do so. Grab a few of your closest friends and book a trip with a captain and who knows you may be the next big winner.
UPDATE The 1,000 Dollar A Day Derby ran for two years and was very successful, but fell victim to financial difficulty due in part to the downturn in the economy and the addition of the weekly trout category. Also the captains were not required to sell tickets and the derby did not receive the support it had the first year. Derbies come and go. We sincerely hope someone will put together another as exciting as this one was in the near future.
